IT SEEMS THAT LENT has a whole lot to do with journey and with witness, both of which are risky. In the words of our Guatemala mission statement, we call ourselves to “do something concrete in each of the projects that reflects our charism and calls forth hope and a deepening of the value of life.” John Indermark in his book Do Not Live Afraid says it well, even if he uses more words than we do: “Faith’s witness is never anonymous because it comes from particular individuals and groups who live within and speak to particular locales and situations. As a result, faith’s witness is never without risk; the goal is not safety but transformation. God beckons us to trust the word of “do not be afraid” and then bids us speak as witnesses to the holy in life.”
